An album of over 200 high quality colour photographs showing the diversity in scenery and train types to be found in Southern California.

This area of the United States is home to some of the most picturesque scenery in the world. Several busy railway routes traverse difficult terrain, including the Union Pacific-owned track between Mojave and Bakersfield, which climbs over the Tehachapi Mountains. Some of the long-distance and heavy freight services illustrated can be powered by up to ten locomotives.

The route over Cajon, one of the busiest freight routes in the world, is also covered, as well as that between Barstow and Needles, the central California line, and the highly photogenic Pacific “Surfliner” route between Los Angeles and San Diego. Passenger services also feature in the illustrations.

Railways of Southern California looks at each geographic region in turn. The photographs are presented mainly in one-per-page format, with detailed captions explaining the locos, their routes, and the best places to see these trains. A landscape format has been adopted to best display the high quality illustrations. 160 pages. Hardback.
