This is the first of two volumes covering the history of the iconic E 94 electric locos. Originally published in 1990 as a single, long out-of-print, book it is now being republished as a two-volume set. The class was intended mainly for freight and banking duties, but on occasions was also used on passenger workings.


This first volume looks at the development of the E 94 loco design and concentrates on their operations in southern Germany from entry into service in 1940, until the last examples were withdrawn by DB in 1988. A number of previously unpublished historical facts, such as details of the locos sent to the Soviet Union as war reparations, have also been included. Also included are short sections on the East German and Austrian E 94 loco fleets, which will be covered in more detail in volume 2, which is due for publication in winter 2026–27.
