The 145-strong Class 101 locomotive fleet, manufactured by Adtranz, replaced the legendary Class 103, of which the same number of examples had been built, starting in 1997. Class 101 marked the beginning of a new generation of modern three-phase AC locos for the then newly established Deutsche Bahn AG, formed by a merger of the former West German Deutsche Bundesbahn and East German Deutsche Reichsbahn networks.

These locos, capable of speeds of up to 220 km/h, quickly became versatile and, in their early years, could also be found operating on other, slower services. They also soon started to appear in eye-catching advertising liveries, a phenomenon that only became a trend because of them.

This volume examines the origins, development and history of the class, covering both the technical aspects and the design variations. Numerous individuals involved in the construction, commissioning and operation of the locos offer in-depth insights into their entire career. Although the class may have been less prominent than her predecessor, she is equally responsible for the success of high-speed rail in Germany. Superblly illustrated with over 400 colour photographs. German text. Hardback. 240 pages.
