This is a detailed history of the famous suspension railway (Schwebebahn) in the German city of Wuppertal, published to coincide with the 125th anniversary of its opening in 1901. 

The book starts with a brief look at the early experiments by industrial pioneer Friedrich Harkort with a horse-drawn suspended monorail in 1826 in Elberfeld, a town that would become a district of the newly formed city of Wuppertal just over 100 years later. This is followed by the planning, construction and operation of the Schwebebahn from its opening until the present day, including the power supply, depots, stations and rolling stock. 

There are also chapters on other suspension railways around the world and Wuppertal’s buses and long-gone tramway network, parts of which were operated by the same company as the Schwebebahn for a time in the 1920s and 1930s.
