Many railway enthusiasts in Germany associate the name Lutz Hornung with outstanding photography. As a true Berliner, after the city’s division he lived in the western part, he was deeply influenced by Prussian ideals, hence his drive for perfection which is generally reflected in his railway photos. He always ensured that his images clearly showed the locomotive number and, where possible, the entire train.
Lutz Hornung's photographic activities extended far beyond Berlin, as a young adult he gained access to steam traction at the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR through relatives in Stassfurt. Meanwhile, his second home, Beratzhausen in Bavaria, became the basis for documenting locomotives on West Germany’s Bundesbahn network. Over 40 years of photographic activity he created an archive which covers almost all German steam, diesel and electric locomotives on both German state railways.
