A reprint of this 1990-published history of the Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway, which ran between the Somerset coastal towns of Weston-super-Mare and Portishead.
Opening as far as Clevedon in 1897 and on to Portishead in 1907, the line was conceived as a tramway in the 1880s following the failure of earlier plans for a broad gauge railway from Portishead to Clevedon.
The book examines the political background to the scheme and describes the construction and operation of the route, its signalling and rolling stock, fares and ticketing, and the various accidents that occurred on the route over the years. The railway had an interesting collection of locos and coaches, including ex-Southern Railway and Metropolitan Railway vehicles, American tramcar-style clerestory coaches, and petrol railcars.
The Weston, Clevedon & Portishead Light Railway provides a comprehensive history of this branch line from opening to closure. First published 1990. Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs and maps. 160 pages.
