Adrian Knowles has put together this collection of colourised black & white railway photos from between the 1850s and the 1950s.
Each left-hand page has the original photo and a page of text describing the background to the subject, with other relevant photos and/or maps also provided. There is then an enlarged colourised version of the photo on each right-hand page.
Subjects depicted include London & South Western Railway loco superintendent Dugald Drummond’s special loco and saloon combined into one vehicle known as “The Bug”, the original entrance to Knightsbridge Underground station, “Princess Coronation” Pacific No. 6227 “Duchess of Sutherland” at Crewe with the Plymouth to Liverpool through carriage, a Great Western Railway railcar at Arley on the Severn Valley line (now the Severn Valley Railway), and the branch termini at Bembridge and Henley-on-Thames.
The oldest photo depicts the Royal train for the King of Piedmont-Sardinia in 1855 with GWR “Iron Duke” class loco “Lord of the Isles”. At the back there is a detailed chapter describing the colourisation process.
