This is an abridged version of a much larger manuscript prepared by the late Ralph M Caple, and has been published posthumously. It provides a social history of the Western Valley lines to Bryn Mawr and Ebbw Vale in South Wales, with material drawn from newspaper reports, magazine articles and oral evidence collected by the author.
The book looks at railway operation from a variety of points of view, including that of train crews and permanent way gangs, including several first-hand accounts. It vividly describes the lives of railwaymen in days gone by and recalls many long-forgotten working practices but also covers the period up to the early 21st century.
