Part of a series of 12 books being published in 2025 to commemorate the Railway 200 anniversary, this is a fascinating collection of railway photos taken in and around Newcastle mostly dating from between the 1930s and the present day.
Many of the archive photos are of steam-hauled passenger and freight trains and locos on shed. Newcastle was closely associated with railway pioneers George and Robert Stephenson, and near the start of the book there is a photo of George Stephenson’s Killingworth Colliery loco “Billy”. Stephenson’s works continued to build locos over 100 years after its establishment.
Other steam locos illustrated include Class D20 4-4-0s, Class Q5s and Q7s, and Gresley Pacifics and A3 4-6-2s. The famous North Tyneside Loop electric units are also featured.
Diesel classes covered include Classes 03, 25, 37, 40, 45, 47, and of course the legendary Class 55 Deltics. A variety of first and second generation DMUs are also included, along with HSTs, Class 91 electrics and their replacement Azuma trainsets.
Approximately 30 colour and 53 black & white photographs. Hardback. 80 pages.
