To commemorate 200 years of train travel since 1825, London South is one of a series of 12 books being released by Transport Treasury in 2025, all of which showcase railway works and centres. It comprises of a collection of colour and black & white images featuring the railways and trains that have served South London over this period.

From the horse-drawn Surrey Iron Railway to today’s electrified network, South London’s railways have shaped its growth. The Victorian era saw rapid expansion, turning villages into bustling suburbs, while stations like Clapham Junction and London Bridge became vital hubs. Merging under the Southern Railway in 1923, steam gave way to electrification, and iconic trains like the Brighton Belle and Golden Arrow became legends. Today, with limited space for expansion, the network adapts to modern demands while preserving its rich history.
