David Maidment has compiled this detailed history of the British Atlantic express tender locomotivess that hauled express passenger trains between the late 1890s and the 1930s. This design got its name from a 4-4-2 locomotive built for the Atlantic City Railroad in the USA in 1894.

The book describes the design, construction, history, operation and performance of the Great Northern, Great Central, North Eastern and North British Atlantics and the London Brighton & South Coast locos that were developed from the Great Northern design. Also covered are the more unusual Lancashire & Yorkshire “Highflyers” along with Churchward’s Great Western Atlantics and his three French Compounds.

At the back there is an appendix giving a theoretical power comparison of the British Atlantics and a full fleet list for each type of British Atlantic locomotive. Well-illustrated throughout with over 300 black & white photographss. Hardback. 232 pages.
