In Beyond the Nameboard Will Adams has produced a book which reveals the origins behind various quirky and unusual sounding station, depot, tunnel and junction names across the former Southern Region. He tells us about places such as Bat & Ball, Bopeep Junction, Elephant & Castle, Westward Ho! and Nine Elms. The termini at Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Victoria and Waterloo are also included.
More than 40 locations from across the former Southern Railway network are featured, stretching from south London and across Southern England. For each location there is a page of text explaining the origin of the name and describing the development of the rail network at that location.
A good selection of images have been included which show people, objects and buildings from which the place names have originated. Also featured are photographs of trains, buildings and railway infrastructure. Where the line or station in question no longer exists, some present day photographs of the location have been included.
Over 91 colour and 69 black & white illustrations. Hardback. 112 pages.
