Today, the medium-weight shunting locomotives of the V 90 family, developed by MaK in Kiel, are among the last classic diesel locomotives from the Deutsche Bundesbahn (West German federal railways) era still in service with DB AG in large numbers.

Introduced in the 1960s and 1970s, with over 500 examples entering service, these machines continue to prove their worth at marshalling yards and freight depots, on industrial sidings, and in transfer services.

This EK Special looks back at the origins of the V 90 family (the original V 90/290 and V 91/291 classes) and details their many conversions into Classes 290.5, 294, 294.5, 295, and 296. There is also an up-to-date overview of the current fleet remaining with freight division DB Cargo, as well as the growing number of locos sold to private operators.
