The Gäubahn is the name given to the Stuttgart–Singen main line, parts of which have operated as a single-track line on large sections since World War II. However, this major route, now important for traffic to Switzerland, was not originally planned in its current form and is comprised of a number of different sections. Historically the name Gäubahn referred only to the section between Stuttgart and Freudenstadt.

The EK Special magazine publication tells the fascinating story of the development of the route, whose dynamics, fuelled by the “Stuttgart 21” project, extend to the present day. The publication focuses particularly on the development of long-distance services: for a time, it was even possible travel from Stuttgart directly to Sicily in southern Italy without changing trains. Colourful sets of SBB and FS coaches were a common sight for many years.

The motive power used on this service was also extremely diverse, featuring such distinctive loco classes as the Württemberg “C” and the Prussian P10. V 200 diesels were regulars on the route until electrification, after which Class 110-hauled long-distance trains dominated the route for around two decades. Since 1999, a wide variety of train types have been running on this line.

Superbly illustrated with over 200 colour and black & white photographs. German text. 96 pages.
