Following the end of steam on British Rail, most railway photographers found their activities restricted to stations and viewpoints outside the railway boundary. However, those who were within the railway’s employ could get around this difficulty and Terry Nicholls was one of them. Working in the control function in the Bristol area also meant that he enjoyed inside information about special workings and some of the results of that can be seen within this book.

Andrew Royle has compiled a first-rate selection of Terry’s colour photographs, from the Transport Treasury collection, to produce Western Region Cameraman: The Railway Photography of Terry Nicholls. The majority of the images were taken in the Bristol area, covering the period from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Most of the locomotives featured are the ‘Westerns’, at a time when blue was very much the colour, but variety in motive power could still be found across the Western Region.
