This is a detailed history of the legendary Class 55 “Deltics”, which were synonymous with the East Coast Main Line throughout the 1960s and 1970s from the end of steam traction until their replacement by InterCity 125 High Speed Trains (HSTs).

The book starts with a brief look at the steam locos that the Deltics replaced, followed by the other diesel loco classes that vied for dominance on Britain’s major long-distance routes. There are then chapters on the prototype Deltics, and outline histories of each of the production series Deltics from entry into service until withdrawal.

Most of the photographs are black & white but there are colour sections towards the end featuring the locomotives in service and in preservation, including details of charter trains worked and their current locations.

Finally, there is an appendix listing roster diagrams for the Deltics in 1962, 1969 and their last few years of service. Well-illustrated throughout with around 70 colour and 180 black & white images. Hardback. 248 pages.
