The British Rail High Speed Train: The Evolution of the Intercity 125 (Pen & Sword)

Tim Hillier-Graves has compiled this tribute to British Rail’s iconic InterCity 125 High Speed Train (HST) as the days of the remaining HSTs draw to a close.

The book takes a detailed look at the background to the HST project and how BR sought to develop a long distance train fit for the post-Modernisation Plan rail network in the light of rising operating costs and losses at a time when competition from road and air transport was increasing.

As well as the HST, the book also looks at its forerunners such as the Blue Pullman sets, the Japanese Shinkansen high speed trains and BR’s ill-fated Advanced Passenger Train (APT) project. There are then detailed accounts of the construction and operation of HSTs under BR and post-privatisation, including the major accidents at Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Ufton Nervet and Carmont.

Superbly illustrated with around 230 colour and 20 black & white photographs. Hardback. 244 pages.
