This is the first of two books on heritage railways in North East England, focusing on Northumberland and County Durham. The North East is the birthplace of the railways, beginning with horse-drawn wagons on wooden rails built to carry coal and, later, the Stockton & Darlington which was the world’s first public passenger-carrying line.

Railways covered in this volume are the Aln Valley Railway, the Heatherslaw Light Railway, the North Tyneside Steam Railway, the South Tynedale Railway and the Weardale Railway. For each of these lines there is a short introduction and history followed by several pages of photos mostly arranged one per page. Most of the photos are from the 2010s and 2020s, including Rail 200 specials at the North Tyneside and Weardale railways. A few photos from the 1990s and early 2000s are also included.

Well-illustrated throughout with around 100 colour photographs. 128 pages.
