The railways in the far South East had relatively little photographic coverage during the 1980s and 1990s compared to other parts of the country, sometimes because they were wrongly dismissed as lacking in variety or the region was thought to have an uninspiring landscape.

In this book David Staines confirms that these misconceptions could not be further from the truth. Through a series of high-quality images accompanied by detailed and interesting captions, the photographic lid is lifted on the fascinating variety of motive power and complex operations found in the area at the time. 

The reader will travel from London’s gritty metropolis, through the green Surrey Hills to the Sussex Coast and the South Downs National Park. The pictorial journey extends into the “National Landscape” of the High Weald and the “Garden of England” as Kent is known, with its estuary marshes, rolling countryside and iconic white cliffs.
