Graeme Gleaves has compiled this detailed history of the Prototype Electro Pneumatic (PEP) electric multiple units built in the early 1970s and their derivative production series units of Classes 313, 314, 315, 507 and 508 that followed between the mid-1970s and the early 1980s.

These units heralded a new era in train design, with power-operated sliding doors instead of the manually-operated slam-door stock previously used on many suburban services. The PEP family of EMUs also had a distinctive shape of body, curved on the lower part and slanting upwards towards the roof.

This book describes the design, development and operations of each type of unit from introduction until withdrawal from service. Whilst Classes 315 and 507 largely continued to operate the services for which they had been built throughout their lives, Classes 313 and 508 have had a much more varied career. Class 314s never strayed from their native Strathclyde but were initially built for the Argyle and North Clyde lines and were later transferred to the Cathcart Circle.

Comprehensively illustrated throughout with around 180 colour and 20 black & white photographs. Hardback. 160 pages.
