This book takes a look at the variety of freight wagons built in the 20th century that are still in operation on Britain’s rail network today or were in service until recently. As well as the design of wagons, Goods Wagons in the UK also looks at the numbering system, a topic not covered by many other publications.

The first chapter looks at private owner wagons owned by aggregate producers and other companies that transport their goods by rail, including Castle Cement, Hanson, ICL Fertilisers and VTG among others. This is followed by air-braked wagons, most of which were built for the train operators themselves, be it BR or its privatised successors.

The last few pages are given over to photos of stored wagons and wagons bearing full nine-digit Continental RIV (Regolamento Internazionale de Veicoli) numbers, some of which are used on freight trains running between Britain and mainland Europe. Many different types of wagon are illustrated, including aggregate hoppers, car carriers, oil tankers, and rail-carrying flat wagons, to name but a few.

Around 200 colour photos. 96 pages.
