This book tells the story of Britain’s many independent locomotive manufacturers from the early days of railways to the present day, including the major players such as Robert Stephenson & Co, the Vulcan Foundry and Beyer Peacock along with numerous smaller players. These include builders of steam, diesel and electric locomotivess for railways in mainland Europe and countries such as the USA, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The last chapter is a list of minor companies that only built a few locomotives.
