Steam Memories No 5: A 1960s Southern & Western Miscellany (Transport Treasury)

Hector Maxwell has put together this collection of colour slides taken by the late Bob Ratcliffe. As Bob lived in Southern Region territory throughout his life, this was where most of the photographs were taken but he did also occasionally venture onto the Western Region.

Most of the images are from the last few years of steam operation on the Southern. These include several photos of locos on shed as well as complete trains. Notable trains depicted include the Dorset Coast Express from London to Swanage in its last few years of operation, and there are close-ups of the “Bournemouth Belle” Pullman cars, loco nameplates, and railway infrastructure such as signals and signal boxes.

As a sign of the times, towards the end there are views of steam locomtoives being scrapped and the remains of the closed lines that formerly served Hawkhurst, New Romney and Littlestone-on-Sea. Hardback. 80 pages.
