Steam Memories No 4: Footplate Cameraman North and West (Transport Treasury)

Patricroft steam engine driver Jim Carter loved to photograph the locomotives he worked on, and became known as “The Footplate Cameraman”. His stunning photographs illustrate a variety of ex-LMSR and BR Standard steam locomotives with a few interesting examples of early diesel traction such as Classes 37 and 40, a Class 52 “Western” and an English Electric Type 2 also included.

There are a number of images taken in or outside Patricroft shed and other engine sheds, and in locations where the railway has long since disappeared and the site redeveloped beyond all recognition. Mr Carter’s photographs take us on two nostalgic journeys: one from south to north along the West Coast Main Line through Lancashire from industrial Warrington into the wilds of Westmorland, then we follow much of the historic route of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway from east to west before ending our tour at Chester where the final image features Stanier Class 5MT 4-6-0 45156 “Ayrshire Yeomanry” bearing the words “Farewell to Patricroft” chalked on its smokebox by Mr Carter himself shortly before its withdrawal from service in 1968.
Contains around 80 black & white photographs. Hardback. 80 pages.
