This is the third in a series of books published by the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society on the work of renowned photographer Michael Mensing (1933–2014), covering the West Midlands between 1960 and 1962.

This was a period of considerable change, when steam was giving way to diesel, and Mr Mensing has captured an interesting collection of both types of traction on a variety of passenger and freight workings. These include loco-hauled trains, DMUs and Blue Pullman trainsets depicted at stations and by the lineside. Unlike many other photographers of that era, Mensing did not visit engine sheds to photograph static locos and preferred rural locations.

The photographs are arranged one per page, with each photo having a detailed caption. The DMUs are described with details of their builders, and the TOPS classifications are included with the first photo for each class of unit to help those readers who are familiar with these even though the TOPS system was not introduced until long after these photos were taken.
