During the 1950s and 1960s, when most railway photographers were mainly focusing on locomotives, Geoffrey Kichenside was one of a small group that also turned their attention to coaching stock. This was a period of great variety, with World War II having prolonged the lives of many vehicles beyond their natural lifespan. 

Although the then new BR standard (later known as Mark 1) coaches started to appear in large numbers, much pre-grouping and pre-nationalisation stock remained in service until the end of the 1960s. Geoffrey Kichenside’s coach photographs can now be found in the photographic archive at Transport Treasury. Hugh Longworth has taken material from these to produce a number of albums documenting the variety of coaching stock in BR service in the first two decades after World War II, the first of which covers LMS stock in BR service.

Each photgrapho is accompanied by a diagram showing the interior layout of the coach and a caption giving a basic history of the vehicle. This first volume covers coaches built by the LMS or by BR to LMS designs. Hardback. 80 pages.
