This is a fascinating collection of photos of withdrawn steam locos taken during a series of visits to the (in)famous Barry scrapyard in South Wales by one of the authors Geoff Barker.

They show the locos in varying states of disrepair, and details of where the loco is now preserved have been included in the captions where applicable. There is a good mixture of photos of specific locos and more general views of the site, most of which were taken in the days when it was still possible for anyone to turn up and look around the yard. In some cases the locos have the name of their prospective buyer painted on the bodyside, and there are also locos with instructions such as “Do not take parts” as the theft of components remained a problem for many years, hence the decision to fence off the site in the mid-1980s.

Barry Scrapyard in the Late 1970s and Early 1980s contains a fascinating series of colour photographs of steam locomotives in various levels of decay. Encouragingly, many of the locomotives depicted would be rescued by the preservation movement.

Photographs are each accompanied by informative captions. 96 pages.
