Despite its prosperity, it was quite lated in the development of railways before Aberdeen, Scotland's third  city, was connected to the railway network. The first line to reach the city was the Aberdeen Railway, which arrived at Ferryhill in March 1850.

This was followed by the Deeside Railway in September 1853, with the line being extended to Guild Street in August 1854. The Great North of Scotland Railway arrived in 1854, with an extension to Waterloo being built in April 1856. However, the two termini were around haf a mile apart along the quayside, which through passengers had to negotiate.

A Joint station was finally realised in November 1867, with further expansion taking place in the early 20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, several branch lines around Aberdeen were to close, leading to a rationalisation of facilities at Aberdeen station.

This book follows the history and deveopment of railways serving Aberdeen, its station, train services, motive power, signalling, hotels and railway administration. Well-illustrated throughout with colour and black & white photographs, maps and reproduced advertising material. 152 pages.
