In its 2 ft gauge form the Beira Railway only operated along its entire 222 mile length, from the port of Beira in Mozambique to Umtali on the borders of the then new Rhodesia, for two years, 1898 and 1899. The line took ten years to construct and., upon completion, it was converted to the 3 ft 6 in Cape gauge and connected with the rest of what would later become Rhodesia Railways.
The Beira Railway: The 2ft Gauge Line which opened up Rhodesia is a detailed history of the railway, the complex economic and political background to the project and its construction and operations from its early days to the 1960s. A a description of a journey on the original 2 ft gauge railway is included. The later histories of the locos look at their operations from the early 20th century onwards, including recent times when many of them have been lovingly restored. At the back there are line drawings of some of the locos and bogie wagons.
