In the first of two volumes, Andrew Fox has put together this fascinating collection of images of Austria’s standard gauge railways taken by the late Peter Gray between the late 1950s and the early 1970s.
At this time a wide variety of steam traction was still in use, ranging from veteran locomotive classes over 50 years old to modern ex-Deutsche Reichsbahn wartime locomotives. During the years that followed, the effects of rationalisation and modernisation would transform the country’s railways beyond all recognition.
The book is divided into chapters covering different regions of Austria, and the last three chapters look at the Erzbergbahn, the Graz-Köflacher Bahn and the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen.
