From the Strasbourg tramway company, founded in 1877 in the then imperial territory of Alsace-Lorraine, and the Lahr tramway company, opened in 1889 in Mittelbaden, an impressive metre-gauge network developed by World War I. The lines on the right bank of the Rhine were transferred to the Central Baden Railway Company (MEG) in 1923. This book covers the MEG network from its beginnings until its merger with the South West German Railway Company (SWEG) in 1971, and the development of the MEG lines during the SWEG era.

The book describes the once approximately 115 km long MEG network, its eventful history, its lines and stations, and the complete rolling stock fleet. The many illustrations allow the reader to experience the now completely vanished metre-gauge network and its unique atmosphere with steam trains and railcars. The surviving relics are also included.

Author Thomas Kohler has not only meticulously researched and documented the history of this large German metre-gauge network over many years and brought it up to date with this book, but as a museum railway enthusiast he is also involved in the preservation of the remaining MEG vehicles on the Selfkantbahn near Aachen.
