This book contains a series of photographs taken by English photographer Charles R. Gordon-Stuart on various visits to France between 1938 and 1964. His only pre-World War 2 visit to France was in 1938, the first year of SNCF's existence, where he photographed steam locomotives still displaying liveries and numbers of their old operating companies.

Following the war, he made further visits to various regions of France in 1947, 1951, 1952, 1958, 1960 and 1964. His images record the gradual change over 30 years with the virtual disappearance of steam from the French railway scene, replaced by railcars, diesels and electric traction.

Photographs are all of a high quality and presented in a variety of size formats. Each photograph is accompanied by an informative caption, both in French and English text.

Dual French and English text. Hardback. 320 pages.
