Uwe Friedrich, born in 1940, was a passionate follower of the railways and of technology. As early as 1965 he began to photograph railway operations in his hometown of Löbau (Saxony) and in Upper Lusatia. From 1966 he regularly used his free time and holidays to eagerly pursue railway photography throughout the GDR.

Alte Meister der Eisenbahn-Photographie: Uwe Friedrich contains a selection of some of the best of his images, taken between 1965 and 1977. The photographs are mainly of steam locomotives at work, with a handful of DR diesel and electric locos also included.

Steam locomotives are featured from Bautzen, Cottbus, Elsterwerda, Meiningen, Nossen, Neubrandenburg, Saalfeld, Stralsund, Wittenberge, Wismar, and Wilsdruff depots. The book provides an interesting insight into railway operations of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in a period when photography of railway systems and locomotives was often difficult. 144 pages. Hardback. German text.
