Railway photographer Chris Davies has compiled this fascinating collection of photos from along the Welsh Marches Line (WML) from Newport to Shrewsbury. They were mostly taken within the last ten years, but some archive shots from the 1960s are also included.
The book is divided into chapters on each section of the route, each starting with a description of the relevant section and its signal boxes. The WML is one of the longest routes on the national rail network that still uses the steam age Absolute Block signalling system. There are also descriptions of passenger and freight services on the line and the types of train used.
A variety of passenger and freight trains are depicted, including the Transport for Wales loco-hauled services formed of Class 67s and Mark 4 coaches. Also featured are a number of steam-hauled charter trains and Class 37s hauling withdrawn Merseyrail Class 507 and 508 EMUs to Newport Docks for scrap.
