In The Scottish Region in the 1970s and 1980s Revisited author, Andy Gibbs, provides a second selection of images documenting the Scottish rail scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Returning to the Highlands, Lowlands and Borders of Scotland Andy records the period with a collection of previously unpublished photographs showing trains in the region. The emphasis this time being on the outlying areas, rather than on Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The journey in this volume begins in Berwick, travels up the East Coast Main Line until Edinburgh, then moves across the Central Belt, and from Glasgow continues down the West Coast Main Line. Next Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway are covered with a trip on the Glasgow South Western route. The journey then resumes at Edinburgh, when Andy heads through Fife to Aberdeen, visits Inverness, the Kyle of Lochalsh, the far north, and heads south along the Highland line. He then finishes with a trip through Oban, Fort William and Maillaig on the West Highland line.

Locomotives featured include classes 06, 08, 24, 26, 27, 37, 40, 47 and electric locomotives, as well as multiple units from the branch and commuter lines. Trains are pictured in a variety of settings including country scenes, sites of industrial decay and urban cityscapes. A short introduction is followed by the photographs which are mainly presented in two-per-page format.
