Built as part of the 1955 British Railways Modernisation Plan, the English Electric Type 1s, later known as Class 20s, quickly earned a reputation as one of the most reliable diesel loco classes of their era. Nicknamed “Choppers” because of their distinctive engine noise, these locos have proved to be very versatile throughout their careers, and have seen use on a range of duties from light mixed freight to heavy coal traffic and summer additional passenger workings, and from construction of the Channel Tunnel to trackwork on the London Underground.

This book tells the story of a class that has proved indispensable over the years, despite often being overshadowed by their more glamorous counterparts. From their beginnings at the Vulcan Foundry to their starring roles in railtours and preservation. Also featured are the four members of the class that spent some time working in France with railway construction company CFD. With over 35 examples still active on the national rail network or at heritage railways, the class remains very popular with enthusiasts and operators alike.

The photographs are arranged one per page with detailed captions. As well as external views of the locos there are also two cab interior shots. One of the most notable workings featured in the book is the Kosovo “Train for Life” of 1999. Hardback. 80 pages.
