Ken Chadwick has compiled this collection of photographs of all types of electric locomotive operated by British main line railway companies during the 20th century along with those of some of the best known private and industrial railways.
Some of the photographs are the author’s own, with the rest being sourced from various collections. The book is divided into chapters covering each of the BR routes or regions and railway companies to have operated electric locomotives.
These include London Transport and the North Eastern, Lancashire & Yorkshire, Midland and Southern Railways, along with the Hythe Pier Railway and the long gone Ramsgate Tunnel Railway. There are also chapters on Channel Tunnel locomotives, industrial railways and battery locos such as those of London Transport and the Tyne & Wear Metro.
Each chapter starts with a short introduction outlining the history of the railway or route in question. Where it was not possible to source a photograph of a particular locomotive type a line drawing has been used instead. Contains around 175 colour and 70 black & white photographs. Hardback. 190 pages.
