One of the most fascinating eras for the follower of modern traction was the changeover from the old British Railways liveries, to the corporate blue and grey of post-1965 British Rail. At this time, most of the early unsuccessful Modernisation Plan designs were still in evidence, and the more successful classes could be seen in a state of transition.

The period coincided with the passing of steam from the main line and as a consequence, many of the changes to diesel traction went unrecorded and were rarely photographed. Some interesting motive power went to the scrapyard and certain classes became extinct, something that would be unthinkable in today’s preservation-conscious era.

BR: From Green to Blue contains a selection of colour images recording this period of change. Author, Russell Saxton, has compiled a representative selection of images that record every major livery variation, including the red liveries used by the Western Region for its diesel hydraulic classes.

160 images are included, featuring around 50 different locomotive classes and a small selection of multiple unit examples. All the images are accompanied by informative captions providing further information about the illustration. 96 pages.
