Until now little has been written about London’s first tramways. In Tramways in Victorian London author, Robert J Harley, has compiled a history of the capital’s trams throughout the Victorian era.

Starting in 1861 the book follows the early days of horse trams, then examines the various experiments with technologies, such as steam and cable traction, through to the start of electric operation. The development of London’s tram networks, and the day to day operations of horse trams are covered, as well as what life was like for tram crews and those who looked after the horses. There are several original drawings, diagrams and black & white photos.

At the end of the book there are Appendices covering: Tramway opening dates; London termini; Depots and stables; Routes and fares, including a diagram showing the London horse tramway systems in early 1895; Accident Reports for the Highgate Hill Tramways.
