In The Ruabon to Barmouth Line – A New History author, Peter Dickinson, has researched in great depth the history of this popular Welsh railway, which ran from Ruabon in Denbighshire to Barmouth in Gwynedd.
The Great Western Railway described the journey from Ruabon to Barmouth as ‘a paradise for artists and fishermen and a country rich in mountain streams, wild woods and wide far views, unbeaten in any part of Wales’. For nearly 100 years, passengers could enjoy what was arguably one of the finest journeys in the British Isles from the comfort of their railway carriage. The 54-mile route carried generations of holidaymakers to the beaches of the Cambrian Coast, as well as providing a vital lifeline to the rural communities it served.
The planning and development of the earliest railways in the Dee Valley are covered, followed by the amalgamation of the Great Western Railway, Vale of Llangollen Railway, Llangollen & Corwen Railway and the Corwen & Bala Railway.
The text is accompanied by reproductions of railway related ephemera including letters, share certificates, tickets, posters, signalbox diagrams, telephone circuit cards and a railtour booking form.
