Authors Ron Neal and Roger Hardingham have put together this collection of photos from the Havant to Hayling Island branch line taken by the late Alan Bell, mostly from its last year of operation in 1963.
The book starts with a short history of the line, and there is a good selection of mostly black & white photos from locations along the branch featuring all of the stations and other features such as level crossings, signal boxes and goods sheds. There are also close-up views of the timber trestle viaduct that carried the line onto the island, the poor condition of which was a key factor in the decision to close the line.
The last chapter covers the line’s closure, including a never realised scheme proposed by the Hayling Light Railway Society to reopen the branch as a tramway. Hardback. 144 pages.
