Railway writer and retired railwayman David Maidment has put together this detailed survey of the passenger and mixed traffic steam locos of the London & South Western Railway designed by the L&SWR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer Dugald Drummond.

The book starts with chapters on the life and career of Mr Drummond and the forerunners to his locos designed by his predecessor William Adams. There are then chapters on each of the Drummond loco classes, each of which describe their design and construction, main technical features and areas of operation including example timings on some of the trains that they worked. Full lists of locos allocated to each shed are also included. The photos mostly date from between the 1920s and the 1950s with a few from the early 1900s also included. At the back there is a colour section featuring original postcards, 1960s colour photos, models of the locos, and latter-day views of the locos in preservation.

Hardback. 344 pages. Over 400 photos, mostly black & white.
