Aranjuez-Cuenca-Utiel Requena: Closure by Stealth in Spain: Since the 1980s the Madrid-Cuence-Valencia directo has lost much of its trafffic to the route via Albacete and more recently the Madrid-Valencia high speed line, but remained a lifeline for the communities in a scenic but report corner of Spain. However, as Mike Bent reports, operator RENFE has made little effort to attract more passengers and recent storm damage may offer an excuse for permanent closure.
TRAVERSO: Copper trains over the Gotthard: With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016, the original Gotthard route lost most of its traffic. However, Sudostbahn and SBB have launched a new Zurich/Basel-Locarno service via the mountain route with stylish new trains to attract passengers to one of Europe's most remarkable railways, as Toma Bacic reports.
Rail Centres: Ostrava: The Czech Republic's third largest city is a major industrial centre and an important rail hub, with its location close to the Polish and Slovak borders giving its railways a real international flavour, as Andrew Thompson discovers.
Classic DB electrics to the Slopes: The operation of ski trains from the Netherlands and Sweden to resorts in the Austrian Alps generated work for a variety of ex-Deutsche Bundesbahn electric locomotives during February. Here were present a selection of imaged depicting 1960s and 70s vintage traction heading for the mountains.
Strassenbahn Woltersdorf: Modernity catches up with a Tramway Timewarp: Just 20km from the centre of Berlin, 65-year-old four-wheel Gotha trams remain in daily operation linking Rahnsdorf S-Bahn station with the town of Woltersdorf. However, with the placing of an order for new trams in February 2022, the character of this remarkable survivor is about to be transformed as Keith Fender explains.
HZ Class 1142: Four decades of Croatia's inter-city workhorse: In the early 1980s Yugoslavian Railways had high hopes for its flagship electric loco, but delayed introduction, economic problems and ultimately the outbreak of war meant only 16 were built. Nonetheless, the class remains in inter-city service in Croatia, as Toma Bacic explains.
