This is an interesting collection of photographs which the author, Henry Finch, took whilst resident in South America over a three year spell between 1967 and 1969. During that period he took the opportunity to visit as many railway locations in South America as work, time and money permitted. When he returned to the UK it was with over two thousand colour and monochrome photographic images, which are now held by the Transport Treasury.

The countries included in this title are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay; whilst the majority of the photographs show steam engines, diesel and electric traction also feature. Alongside an innovative Argentine engine, the locomotives shown originate from the UK, US, Japan, Germany and five other European countries.

After the introduction there is a chapter on each of the featured railways, which begins with a brief history and includes an outline of how they have tried to meet the challenges of the last half-century. The author has accompanied each photograph with a detailed caption, and a map of the principal railways of South America has been included.

162 colour photographs. Hardback. 120 pages.
