In 1968, to mark the end of British Rail steam, the Settle & Carlisle Railway hosted the Fifteen Guinea Special, however some 15 years later, in the 1980s, the line was under threat of closure. In Tracking Down 3: The Settle & Carlisle Railway in the 1980s Craig Oliphant and Colin Alexander have put together a collection of black & white photos from the Settle & Carlisle Railway during the 1980s.
At the start of the book there is an introduction describing the long fought battle to save the line, which was ultimately successful. The photographs are arranged one per page with detailed captions. A variety of regular and diverted passenger, freight and parcels trains are featured, along with steam and diesel hauled excursions. The images were taken at stations and from the lineside, and include views of the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Locomotives featured include Classes 31, 37, 40, 45, 47 and 50.
Approximately 80 black & white photos. 80 pages. Hardback.
