The Class 218 diesel loco can literally be considered “legendary” (“sagenhaft”) in many respects. Whether this is because of its incredible longevity, with well over half a century of active service, its timeless elegance, its versatility in hauling trains of all types, its range of diverse engines and technical equipment, or even its colourful appearance at DB and DB AG, and even more so at the many private railway companies that still rely on these locos today. The Class 218 is simply legendary, and its great popularity among railway workers and enthusiasts remains unbroken!
In Sagenhafte Baureihe 218 Peter Rappold presents a selection of photos from the early days of the class to the present day, featuring a variety of long distance, regional and freight trains taken all over Germany.
This large-format book is divided into chapters covering each livery, starting with the “Purpurrot” red which was carried by the locos when new, and finishing with the “Verkehrsrot” red used on many DB locos since the late 1990s. Also featured are all-over advertising liveries, and locos sold to private operators, many of which have applied their own colour schemes or old DB liveries.
