Scotland retains an extensive network of rail and ferry services along its West Coast, connecting Glasgow and Inverness with the harbours of Mallaig, Oban and Kyle of Lochalsh, from where ferries serve many of Scotland's islands.

This book is a colour review of railways and ferries in Western Scotland using the images of acclaimed landscape photographer Dennis Hardley. His photographs illustrate trains and ferries set against the spectacular Scottish landscape.

Each chapter focuses on a different area:

  • The Clyde and Southern Hebrides
  • Oban and the Inner Hebrides
  • Mallaig and the Small Isles
  • Kyle of Lochalsh and the Outer Hebrides

Each chapter consists of a short introduction to rail and ferry services in the area, followed by a series of colour photographs covering the period from the 1970s through to the present day. Each photograph is accompanied by a caption, giving some details about the train/ferry service and the vehicle.

Scotland by Rail and Sea illustrates rail and ferry services operating around the beautiful West of Scotland. 120 pages.
