This new book from Platform 5 Publishing is a spectacular 50-year photographic journey in the company of acclaimed author and railway photographer, Michael Rhodes.

Throughout his career, Michael has constantly sought out the very best photographic equipment and pursued a variety of photographic techniques. Half a Century of Photographing Railways illustrates 360 of the very best images from Michael’s vast collection of over a quarter of a million photographs.

The images are presented in chronological order, from 1973 to 2022, with several photographs selected from each year. Subjects range from unusual workings and rare locations to everyday scenes captured in a particular fashion by the photographer’s eye. The quality and composition of the photographs is superb.

All the images are accompanied by extensive captions telling the story behind each of the pictures. As well as learning about the trains and services illustrated, the reader is also able to learn something about Michael himself and how his busy life has given rise to the creation of this fascinating volume.

Michael’s work as a railway author has often provided official access to railway locations, which in turn has allowed the inclusion of photographs taken in normally inaccessible locations. Much of the book is concerned with subjects in the UK, but Michael’s extensive travels around the world have also allowed the inclusion of some magnificent images from overseas.

Half a Century of Photographing Railways is full of images and stories that will appeal to the railway enthusiast and to the wider photographic community. 240 pages. Hardback.
