This book describes 18 industrial railways in and around the market town of Penistone, South Yorkshire. All of the sites surveyed were connected to, or within two miles of, the former Woodhead route between Manchester and Sheffield.
Narrow gauge railways covered include those at two small coal mines, a water works, a reservoir construction site and two ganister works. Standard gauge railways include a steel works, a petrol supply depot and a wagon works. Haulage systems featured at these sites include cable, steam and diesel locos.
The book contains several maps and a good selection of colour and black & white photos. 148 pages.
