The third volume of this comprehensive survey of industrial railways and locomotives to have operated in County Durham. This volume covers the fluorpsar industry, contractors, locomotive builders, repairers and dealears as well as preservation sites.
The book begins with a series of maps showing the locations of industrial sites in County Durham in relation to towns, cities and mainline railways in the county. The main part of the book lists industrial sites, with a short history and a full list of locomotives operated at each site. Details such as works number, gauge, wheel arrangement, cylinder size and weight are included for every locomotive, where the the information is available.
Locations are divided into four main categories:
- The Fluorspar Industry in Weardale
- Locomotives used by Contractors
- Dealers and Repairers
- Locomotive and Railway Preservation
A full index of locomotives, operators and locations is provided at the back of the book allowing each reference back to the locations section of the book. The book is well illustrated throughout with colour and black & white photographs of locations and locomotives featured in the book. Hardback. 280 pages.
